Getting from the Airport
Visitors arriving at Zayed International Airport (AUH) have several options for reaching the city center. You can take a dedicated airport taxi—identifiable by their black exterior and colored signage in both English and Arabic—which provides transportation to any location within the city. Additionally, if you are traveling from nearby emirates like Dubai or Sharjah, there are established bus connections available.
For those flying with Emirates, the airline offers a complimentary extension of your trip to or from Abu Dhabi for travelers arriving at or departing from Dubai airport. These specific shuttle buses run between Dubai Airport Terminal 3 and the Emirates Abu Dhabi office in Al Sawari Tower.
Public Transportation: Buses and Rail
The city's bus network is a primary mode of transport, featuring modern, air-conditioned vehicles. To ride the bus, you must use a "Hafilat" smart card; drivers do not accept cash payments. These cards can be purchased at various locations, including the main bus station, certain supermarkets (such as Lulu or SPAR), and at the airport. You must tap your card both when boarding and exiting to ensure the correct distance-based fare is calculated.
The main bus terminal serves as a central hub for both city routes and inter-city travel. While many routes serve key areas like Marina Mall and Abu Dhabi Mall, it is important to note that not all stops along a route are serviced; only those marked with official Department of Transport poles are guaranteed to be active.
Regarding rail travel, the Etihad Rail network serves the region. While portions of the network are currently in development or scheduled for future expansion, it provides a connection between Abu Dhabi and other emirates like Fujairah.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are widely available throughout the city and can be flagged down on the street. They are generally considered an affordable way to navigate the area without a personal vehicle. Navigating the City
Because much of the city is located on an island, traffic is common. While the city is accessible via several major bridges and highways, navigating the main island can be challenging due to high vehicle volume. If you choose to drive, please note that parking in the central areas is extremely limited and often reserved for specific institutions. Due to these shortages, many residents and visitors prefer using taxis or ride-hailing services to reach their final destinations rather than searching for parking.
For those who do find a parking space, be aware that zones are clearly marked by color: yellow and grey indicate no parking, while blue and black represent standard fares, and blue and white are reserved for premium fares. Shopping malls typically offer free underground parking, though some spaces near the entrance may be reserved exclusively for electric or hybrid vehicles.
