Overview
The Hyderabad Metro is a rapid transit system providing fast, clean, and efficient travel across the city of Hyderabad. The system operates on an elevated corridor with stations located above ground level. To ride the metro, you can access stations via lifts or escalators from street level. You can choose between purchasing single journey tickets or using reloadable cards for your trip. Trains typically run every four minutes from early morning until late at night, and the experience is supported by clear signage in three languages (including English) and helpful audio announcements.
The network
The metro system consists of three main lines connecting 57 stations:
- Red Line: Runs from Miyapur in North Hyderabad, passing through the Central and Old City areas, and terminating at L B Nagar in East Hyderabad.
- Blue Line: Serves West Hyderabad, Secunderabad, and East Hyderabad, running from Raidurg (at HITEC City) to Nagole.
- Green Line: Connects Secunderabad and the Old City, running between Jubilee Bus Station and Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS).
Key interchange stations where you can easily transfer between lines include Ameerpet, Parade Ground, and MGBS.
Beyond the metro, other rail options include the Multi-Modal Transport System (MMTS), a local train network that offers an affordable way to travel to specific areas. For road travel, the city is served by the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) bus network, which provides extensive local connectivity.
Tickets & fares
You can purchase single journey tickets or use reloadable cards to travel on the metro. While ticket vending machines are available at stations, their reliability may vary. Based on current information, ticket prices start from approximately ₹10, while a journey from one end of the city to the other costs approximately ₹60. These fares are subject to change.
From the airport
To travel from Rajiv Gandhi International Airport into the city center, you have several options:
- Pushpak - Airport Liner: An air-conditioned government bus service that connects the airport to major hubs including Secunderabad (Jubilee Bus Station), Miyapur, BHEL, and Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (Imlibun). Fares for these routes range approximately between ₹106 and ₹265.
- App-based and Metered Cabs: Services such as Ola and Uber are available at the airport. Additionally, Meru and Sky cabs are approved metered services.
- Pre-paid Taxis: A pre-paid taxi counter is operated by the Hyderabad Traffic Police.
- She Cab: A government service specifically for women, where cabs are driven only by female drivers (available if at least one passenger is a woman).
Etiquette & customs
The metro system includes a ladies-only coach on all trains to accommodate female passengers. Please be aware that trains can become crowded during the morning and evening rush hours.
