1. Keyuan Museum (Ke Garden & Museum)
Keyuan Museum, also known as Ke Garden, is a garden and museum complex in Guancheng District, and the Wikivoyage guide suggests it as a natural starting point for a day in the city. The old buildings sit within a larger area of gardens and museum space.
Entering the area with the old buildings costs ¥8, while other parts of the museum and gardens are free. It is closed on Tuesdays, and more than 20 bus routes stop at the Keyuan bus stop. The Lingnan Museum of Fine Art is adjacent, so the two can be combined in one visit.
2. Jin'aozhou Pagoda
Jin'aozhou Pagoda stands on Jinqu Road South, about 200 meters south of the Jin'aozhou Theme Park. It was built between 1597 and 1624 and took its present appearance after a major renovation in 1737. It sits only a few meters from the river bank, and experts are said to be impressed that it has tilted by less than 1% since that renovation.

3. Dongguan Botanical Garden

The Sea Battle Museum on Huandao Road in Humen Town is the detailed presentation of the Opium Wars: their context, events and aftermath, told from the official Chinese government interpretation. Most information is bilingual in Chinese and English, and the opening hallway sets Qing Dynasty history alongside the Enlightenment for a sense of what was happening concurrently in China and Europe.
It is free but requires online registration, and it is open 08:30–17:30 with no entry after 17:00, closed Tuesdays. Parking is limited, so public transport is advised on public holidays. Your ticket also gives access to Weiyuan Fort.
5. Weiyuan Fort
Weiyuan Fort is a 19th-century coastal fort on Huandao Road in Humen Town that saw action during the Opium Wars. A little to the left and across the street from the exit, a trail climbs the hill and crosses over the highway to the ruins of other forts nearby, which are less crowded than Weiyuan itself.
It is free but requires online registration, and the Sea Battle Museum ticket covers entry. It is open 08:30–17:00. See it together with the Sea Battle Museum, which shares the same road.
6. Lin Zexu Memorial Museum
The Lin Zexu Memorial Museum on Jiefang Road in Humen Town focuses on Lin Zexu's 1839 campaign to destroy imported opium, with artifacts on display; the wars that followed are scarcely mentioned. Next door to the left is Humen Story, a small museum of Humen's history, and to the right is Yuxu Ancient Temple, a small temple more than 200 years old that saw both opium wars. Back toward the ticket gate and to your left are the water-filled pits Lin Zexu used to destroy confiscated opium, though the historical marker is in Chinese only.
It is free but requires online registration, and open Tuesday to Sunday 08:30–17:30. Bus route 262 and travel route 3 serve it.
7. Shajiao Fort
Shajiao Fort in Shajiao Community, Humen Town, was built in 1801 and sits closer to the open sea than the other forts in Humen, forming part of the Pearl River's first line of defence together with the Dajiao Hill Fort across the river in Guangzhou's Nansha District. Below the fort is a small dock that Lin Zexu used for confiscating opium.
It is free but requires online registration, and open 08:30–17:30 with no entry after 17:00. Bus no. 236 serves it, but reaching it from the other Opium War sites requires catching two buses.
8. Ying'en Gate Tower
Ying'en Gate Tower on Yunhe East 2nd Road was built in 1384 and is the sole surviving remnant of Dongguan's once imposing city wall. It stands opposite the northern entrance to Dongguan Culture Square and is open all day.
