Start at Rizhao Wanpingkou Seaside Scenic Area, where 5,000 meters of coastline meet a 7.6 million square meter expanse of beach and promenade. This is the largest scenic spot in the city—a place to pace the water's edge, feel the Yellow Sea wind, and watch the light change across the water. The whole stretch opens 24 hours, and costs nothing. From there you can drift west along the coastal path toward Rizhao Beach National Park, letting the rhythm of the shore set your pace.

Rizhao's history runs deep. The countryside around Rizhao holds forests and peaks that feel a world apart from the coast. Wulian Mountain is the closest major range and carries a 4-star scenic rating. For a gentler outing, FuLaiShan scenic spot, about 8 kilometers west of Ju County, sits at just under 300 meters elevation and offers views and trails without demanding exertion. Daqing Mountain also ranks 4-star. These are day trips from the city center, reached by taxi or self-drive.

The Sunrise over the East Sea drama runs most evenings inside Sun Plaza on Qingdao Road. This 30-minute performance blends French and Chinese production design to tell a local love legend, using lasers, water effects, and projection on an open-air stage built for over 2,000 spectators. For indoor options, Rizhao Ocean Park houses marine animals and a bird garden. Dongyi Town is a free-entry replica of ancient Chinese architecture with museums, boat rides, and shops inside, open until 22:30 most nights. The Rizhao Science and Technology Museum offers hands-on exhibits and requires advance reservation by phone.

Third Beach on Pihai Road offers clear water and good sand, with changing rooms and hot water—a working beach for swimmers and those keen on surfing, open year-round. In winter, Qinyuanchun Ski Resort and Wulian Mountain Ski Resort both operate from mid-December through March, with beginner and intermediate trails, equipment rental, and lessons. Children under 1.4 meters ski free at Wulian Mountain.

Rizhao's name means "sunshine," and the city keeps that promise with long hours of bright weather and a coastline that genuinely feels like a place where day begins. Plan to arrive for at least two full days—one for the water and museums, another for a mountain walk or a visit to Dongyi Town. Winter is cool to cold; summer brings crowds and heat. The city rewards slow wandering as much as ticking boxes.
