1. Pingyao Ancient City
Pingyao Ancient City is the headline sight of the region: a Ming and Qing town that is still largely intact and is regarded as the most complete ancient Han Chinese town in China. Its central axis is South Street, with the county office to the east and the temples arranged symmetrically on either side, and it holds both UNESCO World Heritage listing and AAAAA Tourist Attraction status.
It is reachable by both train and bus, which makes it the easiest major sight to build a trip around. Give it the better part of a day rather than squeezing it between other stops.
2. Wang Family Compound
The Wang Family Compound in Lingshi County is one of the largest residential complexes built by successful Shanxi merchants, with 54 courtyards and over 1000 rooms, first constructed in the mid 1600s. The scale is matched by the finishing: decorative lattice screens and windows, shaped openings between rooms and courtyards, graceful roofs, and carvings in stone, brick and wood from the eaves down to the doorways, plus paintings, calligraphy and Qing Dynasty furniture inside.
Jinzhong's special tourist bus terminates here, or you can take a bus or train to Lingshi and then bus no. 7 or 8, or a taxi. Because it sits close to Mount Mian and Zhangbi Castle, tours often combine the three.
3. Mount Mian
Mount Mian, also called Mianshan, is noted for its natural scenery and especially for its cultural and religious relics, and it is an AAAAA Tourist Attraction. It is also the birthplace of the Qingming Festival, one of China's most important traditional festivals.
Reach it on the special tourist bus that departs from Yuci Old Town, or take a train to Jiexiu East Railway Station and get a bus from there. Ticket packages include multiple bus tickets, which are effectively necessary to reach the mountain's many attractions, so budget for them alongside entry.
4. Chang Family Compound
The Chang Family Compound is the largest of the Shanxi merchant family manors, built over several generations by a wealthy merchant family; what remains is one quarter of the original compound. The family's emphasis on education produced scholars, painters and calligraphers, which makes this compound more interesting artistically than some others in the region.
Each courtyard along the 1-km road is somewhat different, and the carvings in brick, stone and wood are of very high quality; one garden holds a collection of carved stone lions, of which about 50 of the original 108 remain. Behind the courtyards is a large garden in both northern and southern Chinese styles, with the 29-m-tall Guanji Tower offering expansive views from the top. 5. Yuci Old Town
Yuci was historically a prosperous merchant town similar to Pingyao, though it suffered serious damage to its architectural heritage in the mid-twentieth century, so most structures you see have been rebuilt or extensively renovated. The notable exception is the Yuci City God Temple, which dates from the Yuan Dynasty and is considered one of the best preserved city god temples in China.
It sits at 225 Fuxing Road, with a bus stop outside the main entrance served by numerous routes, and it is also where the special tourist bus to Mount Mian departs. Ticket sales end 60 minutes before closing and no entry is permitted in the last 30 minutes, so arrive with time to spare.
6. Zhangbi Castle
Zhangbi Castle was founded in the Sixteen Kingdoms period and laid out according to traditional Chinese horoscope and geomantic concepts. It has a brick north gate and an outer gate that once fortified the barbican and was topped with religious temples; the two gates are deliberately not on the same axis, following ancient military defence principles. Nanbao Gate is a stone gate with a carved stone dragon head, and outside it nine red stone paved roads symbolise the dragon's beard.

7. Red Cliff Grand Canyon
Red Cliff Grand Canyon in Lingshi County is a natural scenic area of dense forests, open meadows and rich water resources, with many waterfalls forming a spectacular water system. It offers activities including watching the sea of clouds from the top of the mountain, rafting in the valley and a water carnival.
The park entrance is about 4.5 km east of Lingshi East Railway Station, and special tourist buses are said to run between the station and the entrance. Opening hours are longer from April to October than from November to March, so check the season before setting out.
8. Jinzhong City Museum
The Jinzhong City Museum opened in June 2018 and is a straightforward introduction to the city before you head out to the compounds and old towns. Entry is free, though visitors are limited to 4000 per day.
It is at 188 Guang'an Street in Yuci District, about 150 m southwest of the intersection of Guang'an Street and Xinjian North Road, served by bus routes 5, 11, 13 North, 13 South, 205 and New 202. It closes on Mondays, and also on Chinese New Year's Eve and the first day of Chinese New Year, but opens on other public holidays even when they fall on a Monday. No entry after 16:00.
9. Jiexiu City God Temple
The Jiexiu City God Temple is a Ming Dynasty temple at 285 Dongda Street in Jiexiu City, used, like other city god temples, to worship the local city god. It is a compact stop rather than a half-day out.
It sits about 2 km northeast of Jiexiu Railway Station and 2.5 km west of Jiexiu Bus Station, which makes it convenient to fold into a Jiexiu day alongside Mount Mian and Zhangbi Castle.
