Getting Around Jinzhong
Jinzhong is a prefecture-level city in east central Shanxi province, and its urban core sits in the Yuci District, which has grown increasingly connected to neighbouring Taiyuan, the provincial capital. For a visitor, that closeness matters: much of the practical transport you will use either runs within Yuci or links it directly to Taiyuan. The city has no metro or tram system, so getting around relies on buses, taxis, and a rail network built around two main stations.
Rail Stations
Jinzhong has two principal railway stations, and which one you use depends on the kind of train you are taking and where you want to end up.
- Jinzhong Railway Station (晋中站), on Hongmaying Street in Yuci District, is the main station for high-speed train services. It is served by local bus routes 1, 201 and 205.
- Yuci Railway Station (榆次站), at 103 Yingbin Street in Yuci District, handles regular-speed trains only, but has the advantage of being closer to the city centre. It is served by bus routes 1, 2, 4 (including both inner and outer circle routes), 5, 15, 203, 207 and 801, and can be reached by phone on +86 354 3062207.
If you are arriving by high-speed rail, plan on Jinzhong Railway Station and a bus connection onward; if you are on a slower train and want to be near the centre, Yuci Railway Station is the more convenient choice.
Buses and Public Transport
Local buses are the main way to move around Jinzhong, and both railway stations are well served by them. Fares are inexpensive and paid on board. Because Jinzhong sits so close to Taiyuan, some Taiyuan-based public buses cross into Jinzhong — bus no. 901, for example, runs from Taiyuan Railway Station to the centre of Jinzhong, which makes it a practical link between the two cities.
For longer-distance coach travel, the city's main hub is the Jinzhong Bus Terminal (晋中市汽车客运总站), at the southeast corner of the intersection of National Highway 108 and Longhu Street in Yuci District. It is reached by local bus routes 3, 101, 106 and 205, and can be contacted on +86 354 3984222. Be aware that relatively few buses depart from here — mostly services to nearby towns. For longer routes you will probably need to use one of the bus stations in Taiyuan instead.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing

As a general rule for a Chinese city of this size, taxis are metered and readily available around the railway stations and central Yuci, and app-based ride-hailing is widely used. Treat these as convenient options for short hops, especially when bus routes do not line up with your plans.

Central Yuci is compact enough that walking works well for short trips, particularly around the area served by Yuci Railway Station, which sits closer to the city centre than the high-speed station. Beyond the core, the city spreads out, so you will generally want a bus or taxi for anything further afield.
Tourist Bus
For sightseeing, a special tourist bus operates from Yuci Old Town. Its stops include Yuci Old Town, the Chang Family Compound, the Qiao Family Compound, Pingyao Old Town, Mianshan and the Wang Family Compound. This is the simplest way to string together the region's historic courtyard residences and old towns without arranging your own transport.
Getting There from the Airport
Jinzhong has no airport of its own. The nearest is Taiyuan Wusu International Airport, which lies just outside Jinzhong's municipal boundaries. Buses run between the airport and the city centre roughly eight times a day, and the fare is ¥3 — a cheap and straightforward way to reach Jinzhong on arrival.
