1. Hebei Museum
The Hebei Museum holds expositions drawn from two major archaeological discoveries: the tomb of the King of Zhongshan from the late 4th century BCE, and the royal tombs of the prince and princess of the Han principality of Zhongshan, the Mancheng Han tombs, from the late 2nd century BCE. If you only see one indoor sight in the city, make it this one.
It is open 09:00–18:00 with last entrance at 17:30, and closed on Mondays. Entry is free, so go early in the day and allow time for both expositions.
2. Zhaozhou Bridge
Zhaozhou Bridge in Zhao County is a masterpiece of Chinese civil engineering, created around 600 CE under the Sui dynasty. It survived numerous floods and earthquakes and is considered the oldest stone single arch bridge in the world. An adjacent small museum holds a collection of stone carvings, steles and statues from the vicinity of Zhou County.
It is open 08:30–17:00 and entry is free. To get there, take a bus from the southern Nanjiao Station, which you can reach by bus 35 from the Central Railway Station, to Zhao County or, better, to Ningjin County, and get off at the junction from which it is a 1 km walk.
3. Bailin Monastery
Bailin Monastery is a large monastery in Zhao County dating back to the Tang dynasty. It sits 3 km from Zhaozhou Bridge and can be reached by the same buses, which makes the two easy to combine in a single trip out of the city.
It is open 08:00–16:00 and entry is free. Pair it with Zhaozhou Bridge on the same day rather than making two separate journeys.
4. Cangyan Mountain
Cangyan Mountain is known for picture-postcard temples built on steep hillsides. A pavilion built on a bridge over a gorge there appeared in the final scenes of the Oscar-winning film Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. Looking down at the Cangyan Mountains, two mountains stand facing each other from east to west, and one chain of mountains lies across their back from north to south, with the Fuqing temple built in the valley formed by the precipices and cliffs.
It is about a 90 minute drive from Shijiazhuang. Buses leave from the western Xiwang Station, which you can reach by bus 9 from the Central Bus Station.
5. Shitou Village
Shitou Village, also known as Yujia Village, is a perfect example of Chinese stone architecture, with an excellent local temple, the Qingliang pavilion, built in the late Ming to early Qing period between the 16th and 18th centuries. It can serve as an introduction to the popular beliefs of the Chinese peasants.
It lies 20 km from Jingxing County and can be visited en route to Cangyan Mountain, so combine the two rather than treating them as separate outings.
6. Niangzi Guan
Niangzi Guan is one for those who really love old towns. The dusty coalminers' town has two major attractions: a small but impressive section of the internal Great Wall separating Shanxi from Hebei, a site of major battles from the sixth century on, and a beautiful village built on a stream, with private watermills run by many villagers. Ask for Shuishangrenjia.
It is 20 km east of Shitou Village. A taxi costs ¥80–100 from Shitou Village or Jingxing County, or you can take the train from Shijiazhuang, the 6414, which leaves at 06:38 and returns at 17:59.
7. Pilu Monastery
Pilu Monastery, also called Vairocana Monastery, was built in the Tang dynasty and underwent major restorations under the Yuan and Ming dynasties. The main hall, the Vairocana Hall, contains a stone pedestal with excellent Tang carvings as well as murals from the Yuan-Ming period, some of which are truly magnificent if you have the luck to visit when the sunlight is good enough to observe the details.
It is in Shanjing Village in the northwestern suburbs of Shijiazhuang; bus 115 or 204 from the Railway Station will take you there. Entry is ¥20.
8. North China Military Martyrs Cemetery
This is a large park on Zhongshan W Rd in Qiaoxi with multiple memorials to those who fought and died in the anti-Japanese war. Notable for foreigners are the Canadian-themed memorial dedicated to Norman Bethune, and the Indian-themed memorial to Dwarkanath Kotnis and other Indian doctors who assisted the Chinese.
It works well as a quieter half-day in the city itself, and its location on Zhongshan W Rd makes it easy to fold into a day when you are already in the centre.
9. People's Square and Chang'an Park
People's Square and Chang'an Park are a park in the northern portion and a square in the southern portion, connected to each other. An underground mall is near the southern entrance, where there is a giant white statue of Mao Zedong, and Shijiazhuang Museum is at the western side.
Because the museum sits right beside it, combine the two: see the museum first and walk the park and square afterwards.
10. Shijiazhuang Museum
Shijiazhuang Museum is the city's own collection, and its position on the western side of People's Square and Chang'an Park makes it a natural stop alongside them.
