Before you go
Prepare for your journey by noting the regional geography as you travel through this plateau region nestled between mountain ranges. Located west of Kunming and east of Dali, Chuxiong serves as a central point in the region with nearby destinations like Lijiang and Lugu Lake reachable by road.
Pack accordingly for the local climate, which varies significantly by season:
- Winters are mild, dry, and sunny.
- Spring offers dry and sunny conditions until the rainy season begins in late May.
- Summers are warm, rainy, and generally overcast.
- Autumn brings a return to clear skies and a reduction in rainfall.
Getting there
You can reach the city by rail via the Chuxiong Railway Station, a high-speed facility located on the north side of National Highway 320. This station serves as the sole railway hub for passengers in the area. From here, you can connect to several nearby destinations including Kunming, Nanning, Guilin, Dali, and Lijiang.
Alternatively, you can arrive by bus at the Chuxiong Bus Station, also known as the West Bus Station. This main hub serves as a central point for arrivals from across Yunnan Province.
Getting around
You can reach the Zixi Mountain Forest Park by taking a special public bus service. These buses depart from the Chuxiong Boarding Point for Special Public Bus Services located on Xiyuan Road.
Where to stay
You can find a wide variety of accommodations throughout the area. For those seeking more affordable options, head to the Fēngshèng Xiǎoqū neighborhood, located in an area of small streets north of the river. While several expensive hotels line the main thoroughfares at the intersection of Fēngshèng Lù and Lóngjiāng Lù, you can find dozens of budget-friendly hotels by venturing into the side streets to the northeast of that intersection.

Savor local flavors such as bait blocks, which are made from rice or corn and steamed or boiled into blocks before being fried with bacon or chili sauce. You can also enjoy cold rice noodles; these smooth and refreshing noodles are served with peanuts, cucumber shreds, pickled cabbage, and chili oil to help relieve the heat and stimulate your appetite.
Explore Huidong Street, a small street featuring several bars and cafés. You can visit Tropical Bush, a jungle-themed establishment where you can sit on swings at your table amidst walls covered in dark photo wallpaper. The cappuccino here is highly recommended for its unique character.
What to see and do
Explore the local heritage of Chuxiong by visiting historical sites and cultural landmarks. You can walk through Longjiang Park, located near the river and the downtown area, or visit the Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture Museum to learn about regional history. For a look at traditional architecture, the Chuxiong Confucius Temple is a notable site on the national heritage list; you can view this historic structure from the outside after entering the school grounds where it sits. If you prefer an immersive cultural experience, the Yiren Ancient Town offers nightly performances and dancing shows designed to showcase the culture of the Yi people.
For those seeking nature, Zixi Mountain Forest Park offers a vast landscape featuring a wide variety of plant and animal species, including the notable Ziding Temple. If you prefer modern entertainment, you can catch a film at one of the local cinemas located in the city's shopping areas.
When to go
You can enjoy Chuxiong during the mild, dry winters and springs when the weather remains sunny and clear. During the winter months, you will experience cold nights but pleasant days, while the spring offers early warmth and dry conditions before the rains arrive.
The rainy season brings overcast skies and a significant increase in rainfall from late May through late September. Following this period, you can expect a return to clear skies and drier weather during the autumn months.
Three days in Chuxiong
Day one, you arrive in Chuxiong and settle into your accommodations. You can choose to stay at the Xiongbao Hotel or the JP Hyllis Hotel while you begin exploring the local area.
Day two, you travel to Zixi Mountain Forest Park to experience the natural scenery of Yunnan Province. You can navigate the region via the Chuxiong Railway Station or the Chuxiong Bus Station.
Day three, you explore more of the surroundings. You might visit Yiren Ancient Town or take a trip toward Lóngjiāng before your departure from the region.
