Orientation
Chuxiong is the seat of the Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan Province. For a visitor, the practical geography is simple: the city is compact, and almost everything you need to reach — the railway station, the main bus station, and the local bus network — is connected by a handful of bus routes and short taxi rides.
Getting into Chuxiong
The two main ways visitors arrive are by high-speed train and by long-distance bus.
- By train: Chuxiong Railway Station sits on the north side of National Highway 320. It opened in 2018 and is now the only railway station in the city serving passenger trains — the old south and west stations still appear on some maps but are no longer in use, so don't be sent to them. The station is on the high-speed network, with direct links to Kunming, Dali, Lijiang, Nanning and Guilin. Journey times are short to the nearest major cities: roughly an hour to Kunming and about an hour to Dali, with Lijiang a couple of hours further on and Nanning and Guilin requiring longer rides.
- By bus: Chuxiong Bus Station, also known as the West Bus Station, is at 197 Lucheng Road West. It is the city's main bus station and receives services from across Yunnan Province. The closest local bus stop is the Prefecture Water Resources Bureau stop, served by routes 2, 11 and 17.
Rail, metro and tram
Chuxiong has no metro or tram system. Rail travel here means the national high-speed network, and the single passenger station described above. If you are arriving by train, plan to continue into town by local bus or taxi rather than expecting an urban rail connection.
Buses
Local public buses are the backbone of getting around Chuxiong, and they also serve the main arrival points.
- Chuxiong Railway Station is served by bus routes 9, 10, K1, K2 and K3.
- The area around Chuxiong Bus Station (West Bus Station) is served by routes 2, 11 and 17, stopping at the Prefecture Water Resources Bureau stop.
- For trips out of the city, a dedicated boarding point for special public bus services sits on Xiyuan Road. Buses to Zixi Mountain Forest Park depart from here — useful if you want a day out in the surrounding hills.
In practice, note the route numbers that serve your arrival station and your accommodation, and use the local buses for straightforward cross-city trips. Fares are typically paid on board.
Taxis and ride-hailing
Taxis are a convenient option for short hops, particularly between the railway station and the centre, or when you are carrying luggage. Ride-hailing apps work in the same way as elsewhere in China, and are a good fallback when you don't know the local bus routes. Because the city is compact, taxi journeys tend to be short and inexpensive.
Walking
Central Chuxiong is small enough that walking is a realistic way to cover day-to-day needs — meals, shops and local errands — once you are in the built-up area. The main arrival points, however, sit slightly apart from the centre, so you will generally want a bus or taxi for the first and last leg of a journey rather than relying on foot alone.
Getting from the airport
