Christmas Day in Christchurch 2026

Christchurch, New Zealand

Start with the Santa Parade at the Showgrounds

Christmas in Christchurch doesn't creep in quietly — it arrives with a whole day of noise and sugar and diesel fumes at the Canterbury Agricultural Park. On Sunday 6 December 2026, the Christchurch Christmas Show Parade runs from 11am to 4.30pm at the Showgrounds, and it's less a procession than a full festival: two entertainment stages, amusement rides, a Christmas market and food vendors spread across the grounds. The parade itself steps off at 2pm. Entry and parking are free, and you go in via the Hayton Road entrance. If you'd rather not drive, a free Santa Express bus runs from The Hub Hornby, the central bus interchange and Eastgate Mall — a detail worth knowing, because the car parks fill the way car parks do when everything is free.

Picnic blankets down at North Hagley Park

The biggest single night of the season is Coca-Cola Christmas in the Park at North Hagley Park, on Saturday 28 November 2026. It's a free evening concert of Kiwi performers that closes with fireworks, and it has been running since 1994 — 2026 is its 32nd year. Organisers call it New Zealand's largest free annual Christmas celebration, and the crowd behaves accordingly. Eat beforehand or eat there: Coke Food Fest stalls handle the food. Bring a picnic blanket or a low chair, arrive early enough to claim ground, and decide your route home before the fireworks rather than after them.

Fill the rest of the season with markets, stages and street-level Christmas

Once those two anchors are in your calendar, the weeks around them are yours to shape. The season starts in late November, and almost everything major is free.

Know what's open on the 25th

Christmas Day falls on Friday 25 December 2026, and Boxing Day on Saturday 26 December — observed on Monday 28 December if you don't normally work Saturdays. Christmas Day is one of the days most shops must close, with exceptions such as dairies, petrol stations and pharmacies. Plan your food shopping for the days before, and if you're self-catering, treat the 24th as your deadline rather than hoping to top up on the morning itself. New Year's Day follows on Friday 1 January 2027, with the day after on Saturday 2 January, Mondayised to Monday 4 January if you wouldn't usually work that Saturday.

Use Christchurch as a base for the wider South Island season

If you're in the South Island for the holidays, one easy day-trip extension is Dunedin's Santa Parade on Sunday 6 December 2026. It starts at 3pm on George Street from the Regent Night 'n Day store, runs via the Octagon and finishes at Moray Place South by First Church. It has been held since 1998 and is billed as Otago's largest free community event. For a sense of what the rest of the country is doing on the same weekend, Auckland's Farmers Santa Parade is on Sunday 29 November, and Wellington's A Christmas Cracker runs 11am–5pm on Saturday 12 December at Waitangi Park — free, with live music, crafts, face painting and a chance to meet Santa.

Book your accommodation near Hagley Park or the Showgrounds before the late-November rush, block out 28 November and 6 December in your calendar, and check the event pages the morning of each one. Christchurch does Christmas outdoors, in the sun, in company — and the planning you do now is what lets you simply turn up and enjoy it.
