Count down under the plane trees in North Hagley Park
At 4pm on Thursday 31 December 2026, the lawn between Rolleston Avenue and the Hagley Park cricket ground fills with picnic blankets, folding chairs and small children running at the edge of a stage. This is the NYE Kids Countdown, the family half of NYE26, Christchurch's biggest free New Year's Eve party, and it builds to a 7pm countdown so the youngest visitors can see in 2027 before bedtime. Stay on and the evening programme starts at 8pm, with MC Henare Kaa guiding the crowd towards midnight. Entry is free, and the whole thing happens in North Hagley Park, Christchurch Central — a short walk from the centre of town and easy to reach on foot from most of the city's central accommodation.
Hear a New Zealand rock supergroup, then watch the sky above the park
The headline act is Come Together, a New Zealand rock supergroup playing festival anthems, featuring Jon Toogood of Shihad, Jennie Skulander of Devilskin, Milan Borich of Pluto and Seamus Johnson of Sea Mouse, backed by the Come Together Band — Jol Mulholland, Brett Adams, Matthias Jordan, Alistair Deverick and Mike Hall. They are joined by two Christchurch acts: NOPILOT, a four-piece alternative pop-rock band, and LOVETA, the singer-songwriter Lauren Marshall, whose disco, funk, R&B and electro-pop draws on her work fronting Tadpole. The night closes with a countdown to midnight and a fireworks display over the park. Bring something to sit on, plan to arrive before the evening set if you want a good spot on the grass, and keep the council's event line to hand — 03 941 8999, or eventsproduction@ccc.govt.nz — for programme queries.
Start 2027 slowly in the park you already know
Christchurch's New Year's Day is a quieter proposition than its New Year's Eve. The council's published programme covers the 31 December party at North Hagley Park; no separate New Year's Day markets, parades or concerts are listed for 1 January 2027. That leaves you the city itself. North Hagley Park, where you stood the night before, is open green space in the middle of Christchurch Central — a natural place for a first walk of the year, with the Avon running nearby and the central streets a short stroll away. Treat the first day of January as a day for the city's permanent pleasures rather than a scheduled event: the park, the river, and the central neighbourhoods around them.
Know the shape of the night before you go
- Date: Thursday 31 December 2026, welcoming 2027.
- Family window: from 4pm, with a 7pm countdown for children.
- Main event: live music from 8pm, midnight countdown and fireworks.
- Where: North Hagley Park, Rolleston Avenue, Christchurch Central.
- Cost: free entry.
Because the published programme is specific to New Year's Eve, build your 1 January around what the city reliably offers — open parkland, the river, and the central streets — rather than around a fixed schedule, and check the council's events page closer to the date for anything added for the day itself.
Make the plan now
Book your Christchurch accommodation for the nights either side of 31 December 2026 while the central rooms near Hagley Park are still easy to find, put the Kids Countdown and the 8pm start in your calendar, and leave New Year's Day open for a slow walk through the park and along the Avon. The fireworks are free, the line-up is set, and the only thing left to decide is where you spread your blanket.
