Christmas (Kerstmis) in Rotterdam 2026

Walk Into the Glow of the Oude Haven

The Rotterdamse Kerstmarkt is the largest Christmas market in the city — five consecutive days, daily from 12:00 to 21:00, free to enter, centred on Gelderseplein and organised by Oude Haven businesses together with the municipality and Stichting CultuurConnect. When it runs, a route loops around the harbour past Christmas houses and fire pits, and you'll pass existing cafés and restaurants doing steady business with the market crowd, with historic ships at their moorings and the illuminated water throwing back the shapes of the Kubuswoningen and the Witte Huis. The exact 2026 dates have not been announced; the first edition was planned for 19–23 December 2025, cancelled for organisational reasons and moved to December 2026, so treat any 19–23 December dates you see circulating as leftovers from the cancelled run. Even without the market, the Oude Haven is worth the walk for the ships, the lit quays and the hospitality around the Cube Houses.

Take the Lights Route Through the Shopping Heart

Rotterdam doesn't dress up a historic market square, because it doesn't have one — the Christmas lighting plays against modern architecture instead: the Markthal, the Cube Houses, the Erasmusbrug and the Maas skyline. Walk the shopping and light route through the Lijnbaan, the Koopgoot and the Markthal, and you get the full contrast. The Markthal is covered, which makes it the sensible stop on a wet afternoon, and it's an easy walk from both the Oude Haven and Blaak station. Time your visit for a weekday or a morning if you want room to move; the centre fills through the afternoon, and the final weekend before Christmas is the busiest of the season.

Book the Kerstcircus at Rotterdam Ahoy

The one big event confirmed for 2026 is the Ashton Brothers Kerstcircus at Rotterdam Ahoy, running Saturday 19 to Saturday 26 December, with no performance on Monday 21 December. There are two shows most days and one on Christmas Day, tickets run around €30, and each performance lasts about 1.5 hours entirely indoors — which makes it the reliable choice for families and for anyone who doesn't fancy standing in the cold. If you're travelling with children, this is the anchor of the trip. Book ahead rather than leaving it to the week itself.

Hunt Down the Neighbourhood Markets and the Maker Market

Beyond the headline events, dozens of smaller markets appear across Rotterdam's districts, community centres and cafés through November and December, usually running one or two days each. They're announced late, so check local listings once you're in the city rather than planning around them months out. Smaller district markets often lay on craft activities and music, which makes them a good low-key option with children. The Maker Market Christmas Edition, held at the Groot Handelsgebouw next to Rotterdam Centraal, is the other one to watch: the December 2025 edition ran three days with 70+ local makers, food trucks and live music in the courtyard. No 2026 dates have been announced yet, so keep an eye on it closer to the season.

Eat, Drink and Get Around in the Cold

December in Rotterdam averages around 5°C, and it feels colder by the water, so dress warm — especially for evening visits to the Oude Haven and the light route. The market route and the Markthal put you within reach of the city's cafés, restaurants and food trucks, and the Markthal's covered hall is the obvious place to warm up and eat between stops. Getting around is easiest by bicycle or public transport. Central parking fills quickly and is expensive, particularly in the last weekend before Christmas, so use the P+R options at Kralingse Zoom and Slinge instead. RET runs a modified timetable around the holidays, so check the journey planner before you set out.

One thing to do before you book anything: check the dates. Of the three big events, only the Kerstcircus is confirmed for 2026, and the Kerstmarkt and Maker Market dates are still to be announced. Build your trip around the Ahoy shows, keep the Oude Haven and the lights route as your fixed points, and leave room in the schedule for whatever the district markets turn out to be that year. Start with the circus tickets and the transport, and the rest of December in Rotterdam will arrange itself around you.
