Start at Gwanghwamun Square, Where the Christmas Market Glows Until 21:30
You step out of Gwanghwamun Station on Line 5 at dusk and the square is already lit — a European-style Christmas market running 4–31 December 2026, open 17:30–21:30 each evening. A large tree anchors the space, a carousel turns beside it, and wooden booths sell food and gifts. Admission is free; you pay only at the stalls you choose. From here you can walk the same district twice in one night: Gwanghwamun Square also hosts Seoul Light Gwanghwamun from 11 December 2026 to 3 January 2027, 17:30–22:00, when media facade projections play across the Gwanghwamun building.

Follow the Lanterns Along Cheonggyecheon After Dark
Walk a few minutes east and you reach Cheonggye Plaza, where the Seoul Lantern Festival lines the stream from Cheonggye Plaza to Samil Bridge with traditional Korean paper lanterns, lit from evening into the night, 4–31 December 2026. This is the 18th edition — the festival was first held in 2009 — and organizers note the dates are subject to change, so check before you build an evening around it.

Christmas 2026 falls on Friday 25 December, giving you a three-day weekend through Sunday 27 December. In Korea, Christmas is primarily a couples-and-friends occasion rather than a family holiday, and unlike Chuseok and Lunar New Year, most shops, restaurants and department stores stay open. That means you can spend the 25th eating and wandering rather than hunting for an open door. The trade-off is demand: popular restaurants and cafes fill up, so book ahead where you can. Note that 31 December is a Thursday and not a public holiday — the public holiday is New Year's Day, Friday 1 January 2027.
Time Your Christmas Trip Around the Wider Winter Calendar
If your Christmas weekend stretches into the days after, the city's winter programme keeps running. SEOULCon takes over DDP (Dongdaemun Design Plaza) from 29 December 2026 to 1 January 2027 — a global influencer and creator festival with K-pop performances, K-fashion and beauty expos, influencer talks, esports and a New Year's Eve countdown concert. The 2025 edition drew more than 3,600 participants from 50 countries, and English guidance is available; 2026 admission fees and registration had not yet been announced, though past editions used free pre-registration. Nearest station: Dongdaemun History & Culture Park, Lines 2, 4 and 5. If you stay for New Year's Eve, the Bosingak bell-ringing starts around 23:00 on 31 December, the bell rings 33 times after midnight, and there are celebratory performances — free, no reservation. Based on 2025–26, Jonggak Station (Line 1) was pass-through only between 23:00 and 01:00, subway Lines 1–9 plus the Ui-Sinseol and Sillim lines ran until 02:00, 45 city bus routes serving Bosingak ran last buses around 02:00, and roads around Bosingak closed from 18:00 on 31 December to 07:00 on 1 January. The 2026 transport plan is typically announced around 26 December. The Seoul Plaza Ice Skating Rink ran 19 December 2025 – 8 February 2026 at 1,000 KRW per hour. Seoul Light DDP sits inside the Seoul Winter Festival. Everland and Lotte World Christmas events typically run mid-November to early January. Nationwide ski resort openings land in late November to early December, and the Garden of Morning Calm's Five-Color Starlight Garden runs December to March. If you're heading out of the city, note that Christmas weekend (25–27 Dec) and year-end (31 Dec–1 Jan) see heavy bookings for regional destinations, especially Gangwon Province ski areas; many ski resorts and snow festivals are hard to reach by public transit, so check resort shuttles and intercity bus schedules, and avoid tight connections since snow can delay trains and buses. Most Korean train and bus booking sites require a Korean bank account or mobile phone verification, which blocks short-term visitors — some third-party apps allow booking with a passport and foreign card.
