Follow the Lights from Connaught Place to Chandni Chowk
Start at Connaught Place (New Delhi 110001), where the colonnades are strung with festive light installations and decorated trees. The evening displays run from sunset until around 10:00 PM, and the whole circuit is free to walk. Come early in the evening, take a slow lap of the inner and outer circles, and let the crowds carry you along. When you want more, head north into Chandni Chowk, where the market area is dressed in festive lights and holiday decorations through the Christmas season. A tuk-tuk through Chandni Chowk, Karol Bagh, Lajpat Nagar or Paharganj is one of the easiest ways to see the decorations at street level, and the route past Chandni Chowk puts you within reach of Jama Masjid and the Red Fort. If you want the quieter end of the day, the German Christmas Market at Sunder Nursery (Nizamuddin, New Delhi 110013) opens its gates at 6:00 AM and stays open until 10:00 PM, so an early walk through the grounds is possible before the stalls fill up.
Shop the Christmas Markets for Handmade Everything
Delhi's Christmas season runs on its markets, and two of them are worth planning a day around.
- German Christmas Market, Sunder Nursery (Nizamuddin, New Delhi 110013): curated stalls selling handcrafted ornaments, keepsakes and artisan goods, with fruitcake and mulled wine on the food side and live carol performances through the season. The venue is open 6:00 AM–10:00 PM and often hosts live performances and special events.
- Dilli Haat Christmas Carnival (INA, New Delhi 110023): stalls of handmade crafts, ornaments and gifts from artisans across India, plus gingerbread cookies, mince pies and Indian-Western fusion snacks. Expect cultural performances of traditional dance and music, art and craft workshops, children's activities including puppet shows and storytelling, live carol singing, games and rides. Open daily 11:00 AM–9:00 PM.
- The Indo-German Chamber of Commerce's German Christmas Market is the city's long-running flagship, held at PSOI Lawns, Chanakyapuri, with German Christmas stalls of handcrafted gifts, festive décor and seasonal treats, traditional German food and beverages, live music and Christmas carols, a magic show by a German magician, children's activities including Santa visits, a painting competition and games, and premium lifestyle product stalls. It has run for over 25 years; the most recent edition was held 13–14 December, 11:00–20:00 IST. Watch for the coming edition's dates and confirm them before you travel.
Take In a Carol Service, a Play, or a Concert
The season's cultural calendar leans on music and theatre. The India Habitat Centre on Lodhi Road hosts Christmas-themed plays and performances through the holidays, ranging from adaptations of classic tales to modern festive stories, alongside art exhibits; performance timings vary, so check the schedule for specific dates once you're in the city. Carol singing turns up across the season at the markets — Sunder Nursery and Dilli Haat both programme live carols — so you can pair an evening of shopping with a choir. December 25 itself is a public holiday for schools and offices, though most stores and restaurants stay open, which makes Christmas Day a good one for a long lunch and an afternoon performance rather than a shut-down city.
Eat Plum Cake Where Delhi Bakes It
The city's bakeries go seasonal in December, and the classics are spiced plum cakes, mince pies and gingerbread men. The densest cluster is in and around Connaught Place, with Hauz Khas Village and Khan Market also known for seasonal baking. Two addresses to keep on hand:
- Wenger's Bakery — A-16, Connaught Place, New Delhi 110001; open 10:45 AM–7:30 PM.
- The Oberoi Patisserie — Dr. Zakir Hussain Marg, New Delhi 110003; open 9:00 AM–9:00 PM, and roughly a 20-minute walk from the Sunder Nursery market if you want to combine the two.
At the markets themselves, look for fruitcake and mulled wine at Sunder Nursery, and gingerbread cookies, mince pies and Indian-Western fusion snacks at Dilli Haat.
Build a Day Around Old Delhi and the Landmarks
Give one full day to the older city. Ride a tuk-tuk through the decorated neighbourhoods, then walk into Old Delhi's Ballimaran neighbourhood to see Ghalib ki Haveli, the former residence of the Urdu poet Mirza Ghalib. From there the Red Fort and Jama Masjid are close by, and both are commonly worked into Christmas-season sightseeing along with India Gate. The weather cooperates: December temperatures in Delhi run about 8–23°C (46–73°F), a mild winter with no snow, so you can walk for hours provided you layer up for the cooler mornings and evenings.
Plan around the fact that December 25 is a public holiday but not a shutdown — most stores and restaurants remain open — and that the German Christmas Market, the Dilli Haat carnival and the India Habitat Centre programme all set their own dates each year. Check the current schedules before you book, block out an evening for Connaught Place's lights and a morning for Sunder Nursery, and let the rest of Delhi's Christmas season fill in around them.
