Stand on the Armon Hanatziv Promenade as the Kessim Begin to Chant

It is early morning on 9 November 2026, and the ridge above East Talpiot is filling with white. Women in embroidered netela shawls, men in khamis, families arriving on buses from absorption centres across the country — all converging on the Armon Hanatziv promenade, where the Jerusalem skyline runs from the Mount of Olives to the Old City walls. At 08:30 the reception opens. By 09:00 the fast begins, and the Kessim — the Beta Israel priests — take up the Orit, the Torah in Ge'ez, and read aloud. The sound carries across the terrace in a language most visitors will not understand and will not forget.

Sigd falls exactly fifty days after Yom Kippur, on 29 Cheshvan, and has been a national Israeli holiday since the Sigd Day Law of 2008. It marks the renewal of the covenant and the centuries-long longing for Jerusalem — a longing that, for the Beta Israel community, ended in this city. That is why the day is kept here, on this promenade, with this view.

Keep the Fast, Then Break It With the Crowd at 14:00

The fast runs from sunrise to early afternoon. If you attend, do not eat before 14:00 — visitors of any background are welcome, but the ceremony should be allowed to proceed quietly. Use the morning to watch and listen: the debrash, the sermon delivered by the Kes, is the centrepiece of the observance.

Dress in white if you can — the traditional netela for women, the khamis for men. It is the visual signature of the day, and you will be surrounded by it.

Plan Your Transport Before 3 November

The Jerusalem gathering draws participants from sixteen absorption cities, and buses are organised to bring them in. Reservations for those buses close on 3 November 2026, so if you intend to travel with an organised group rather than making your own way to Armon Hanatziv, sort it out well before that date. The promenade itself is the venue — there is no separate ticketed hall, no indoor backup. You are outdoors, on the ridge, for the duration.

If You Miss Jerusalem, the Country Keeps Sigd Too

Sigd is observed well beyond the capital, and the programmes in the smaller cities are worth knowing if your dates or your base take you elsewhere.

Each follows the same shape as Jerusalem — prayer, fast, communal meal, music — at a smaller scale.

What to Eat, and When

The day has its own rhythm, and food follows it. Before 14:00 you do not eat, out of respect for the fast. The communal meal at 14:00 on the promenade is the first food of the day and the most communal: you eat what is shared, with the people around you, on the ridge. The evening programmes in Netanya, Beersheba and Kiryat Gat extend the day past nightfall with music, and the street around the central squares fills accordingly. Treat the meal as the anchor of the visit rather than a stop between other plans — the fast-breaking is the point.

Build the Trip Around 9 November

Sigd 2026 falls on Monday, 9 November. Book your travel so that you are in Jerusalem for the morning, reserve a bus seat before 3 November if you need one, and keep the afternoon free — the meal at 14:00 and the music at 16:00 are not things to squeeze between other appointments. Bring white. Come hungry, and come early enough to find your place on the promenade before the reading begins.
