Watch a City Switch On Along Passeig de Gràcia
The moment the switch flips, Passeig de Gràcia turns into a corridor of light and the crowd answers with a low, collective hum. Strings of illuminations run overhead down the boulevard, and the same glow spills through Plaça Catalunya and the narrow lanes of the Gothic Quarter, so you can walk the whole centre as one continuous display. Go early enough to claim a spot on the pavement, then drift with the flow rather than against it. If you want the lights without the crush, open-top night buses run dedicated Christmas routes with departures at 6:30 pm and 8:30 pm, daily except 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January.
Stand Under the Star in Plaça de Sant Jaume
Since it replaced the traditional nativity scene, the square in front of the city's institutional heart has held a large illuminated Christmas star, and it performs. A free light-and-music show runs nightly from 6:30 to 10:00 pm, and the installation stays up from late November into early January. Pair it with the garden lights at Sant Pau Hospital, where "Els Llums de Sant Pau" fills the grounds with 18 interactive installations — it runs until 10 January 2027, so it outlasts most of the other seasonal programming.

- Fira de Santa Llúcia — the historic market, trading since 1786, set in front of the Cathedral on Avinguda de la Catedral. Nativity scenes, figurines and traditional crafts, plus a giant Tió de Nadal and the Diada de les Tradicions activities. Open 28 November–23 December, 10 am–9 pm.

December in Barcelona is a listening month as much as a looking one. The Barcelona International Jazz Festival marks its 60th anniversary in 2026 and runs until 23 December, with Marco Mezquida at L'Auditori, Así Canta Jerez en Navidad at the Palau de la Música, and the Andrea Motis Guitar Trio among the December dates. The festival closes on 23 December at the Palau de la Música with the Sant Andreu Jazz Band, celebrating 20 years under the theme "20 years, 20 big bands". The Mil·lenni Festival carries the season into the new year, with Carlos Núñez at the Palau de la Música on 30 December 2026 and Los Enemigos at Sala Apolo on 8 January 2027; the festival runs until late February and further dates may still be announced. If you want a daytime alternative, Fundación MAPFRE is showing Dana Lixenberg's "American Images" — three decades of her US portraits, including Tupac Shakur, Prince, Whitney Houston, Toni Morrison and Lil' Kim — until 17 January 2027.
Eat, Drink and Time Your Trip
The markets are where the seasonal eating happens: the Sagrada Família stalls lean into local gastronomy, and the Moll de la Fusta market's food-truck area is the easy stop when you're walking the waterfront. Build your days around the weather — December is one of the city's coolest months, with daytime lows around 10°C and 30–40 mm of rain spread over roughly five or six rainy days, though showers are generally brief. A compact umbrella and a willingness to duck into a market or a concert hall will carry you through. The Gothic Quarter and the Cathedral square make the natural base: Santa Llúcia, the Brocanters fair and the Sant Jaume star are all within a short walk of each other, with Passeig de Gràcia and Plaça Catalunya a straightforward stroll beyond.
