Athlone

South Africa

Athlone is a suburb of Cape Town in the Western Cape region of South Africa, located east of the city centre on the Cape Flats, south of the N2 highway. Primarily residential in character, the suburb also contains industrial and commercial zones and is served by a railway station bearing its name.

The suburb's two main landmarks are Athlone Stadium and the Athlone Power Station, a decommissioned coal-burning facility. Athlone encompasses several sub-areas including Gatesville, Rylands, Belgravia Estate, Bridgetown, and Hazendal. The greater Athlone area colloquially extends to nearby neighbourhoods such as Rondebosch East, Crawford, and Manenberg, though these are officially classified separately by the City of Cape Town.
