Athens is a consolidated city-county located in Georgia, approximately 70 miles northeast of Atlanta. In 1991, the original City of Athens merged with Clarke County to form a unified government, now officially known as Athens–Clarke County, with Athens serving as the county seat.

The University of Georgia, the state's flagship public university and an R1 research institution, is based in Athens. The university's presence has been instrumental in shaping the city's development and character since its founding, contributing significantly to Athens's growth as an educational and cultural center.
