Akhalkalaki is a town situated in the southern region of Samtskhe-Javakheti in Georgia. It serves as the administrative center of the Akhalkalaki Municipality and is positioned on the edge of the Javakheti Plateau. The town's location is notable for its proximity to international borders, situated approximately 29 kilometers from the border with Armenia.
The recorded history of Akhalkalaki dates back to the 11th century. According to the 2014 Georgian census, the town had a population of 8,295 residents, of which 93.8% were Armenian.
