Mtskheta is a city located in the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region of Georgia. Situated approximately 20 km north of Tbilisi, it sits at the strategic confluence of the Kura and Aragvi rivers. It is recognized as one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world.
Historically, Mtskheta served as a major fortified city and a significant economic and political center for the Kingdom of Iberia until the 5th century AD. During the early 4th century CE, it became the site where Georgia transitioned into a Christian nation and saw the construction of its first Orthodox churches.
Today, Mtskheta serves as a provincial capital and is often regarded as a city museum. The area is home to several notable landmarks, including the Jvari Monastery, Samtavro Monastery, and Svetitskhoveli Church, which are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
