Mutare is the capital and largest city in the Manicaland province of eastern Zimbabwe. Formerly known as Umtali until 1982, it currently ranks as the third-largest city in the country.
The metropolitan area of Mutare has a total population exceeding 500,000 people. This figure includes an urban population of 224,802 and approximately 260,567 residents in the surrounding districts, a demographic size that surpassed Gweru during the 2012 census.
