Fresnillo is a city located in north central Mexico. Founded in 1554 by Francisco de Ibarra, it serves as the municipal seat of Fresnillo municipality and is the second largest city in the state of Zacatecas.
The city is situated at a rail and highway junction within a region known for extensive mining operations, particularly silver. It is home to one of the world's richest silver mines, the Mina Proaño (or Fresnillo Mine), which is owned by the Peñoles mining company. Other significant economic activities in the area include agriculture, cattle raising, and a mining school.
The surrounding municipality covers an area of 4,947 square kilometres and has a recorded population of 196,538 residents.
