Tlilapan is a municipality located in the central zone of the Mexican state of Veracruz. It is situated approximately 85 kilometres (53 mi) from Xalapa, the state capital, and covers an area of 23.85 square kilometres (9.21 sq mi). The name of the municipality originates from the Nahuatl language and translates to "Black creek."
The village has existed since the 16th century. Following Mexico's national independence, it was designated as a municipality alongside Orizaba, San Andrés Tenejapan, San Francisco Necoxtla, and San Juan del Rio. Notable local landmarks include the municipal cemetery, which was established in 1880, and the first Municipal President, who was named in 1916.
