Tlaquilpa is a municipality located in the southern zone of the Mexican state of Veracruz. It covers a surface area of 58.40 km2 and is situated approximately 105 km from Xalapa, the state capital. The name of the municipality originates from the Náhuatl language and translates to "bricklayers' place."
The settlement is an ancient village that existed prior to the Spanish conquest. During the 16th century, it fell under the jurisdiction of Zongolica and was known by the name Santa Maria Magdalena. Tlaquilpa was officially constituted as a municipality in 1831. It shares borders with the municipalities of Mixtla de Altamirano, Astacinga, and Texhuacán.
