Tlacotalpan is a city located in the Tlacotalpan Municipality within the Mexican state of Veracruz. Established in 1550 on what was originally an island in the Papaloapan River, the town served as a significant interior river port in Latin America from the colonial era until the construction of the railroad caused its commercial importance to decline.
In 1998, UNESCO declared Tlacotalpan a World Heritage Site, primarily recognizing its well-preserved colonial-era layout and Spanish/Caribbean architecture. Conservation efforts began in the late 20th century to protect these historical features. Today, the city's economy is supported by fishing and tourism, particularly during the annual feast held in honor of Our Lady of Candlemas.
