Soconusco is a region located in the southwestern corner of the state of Chiapas in southeastern Mexico. It occupies a narrow strip of land along the border with Guatemala, situated between the Sierra Madre de Chiapas mountains and the Pacific Ocean. The area constitutes the southernmost part of the Chiapas coast, extending south from the Ulapa River to the Suchiate River.
The region is characterized by its rich agricultural history and economic production, facilitated by abundant moisture and volcanic soil. These environmental conditions supported the development of the Mokaya and Olmec cultures, which were notably based on the cultivation of Theobroma cacao and rubber from the Castilla elastica tree.
