Sochiapa is a municipality located in the central zone of the Mexican State of Veracruz. It is situated approximately 40 km from Xalapa, which serves as the state capital. The municipality covers a total surface area of 21.39 km² and is positioned at the geographical coordinates 19°12′N 96°56′W.
The political status of Sochiapa has undergone historical changes; according to a decree issued on December 10, 1913, the municipality was suppressed and its territory was incorporated into the municipality of Totutla. However, Sochiapa later recovered its independent political category.
