Poza Rica de Hidalgo is a city and municipality located in the Mexican state of Veracruz. The name of the city translates to "rich well" or "rich pond." While it is commonly believed that the name originated from the region's abundance of oil, historical records indicate that the name actually stems from a pond rich in fish that existed before oil was discovered.
During the 20th century, significant oil deposits were identified in the area. Although most of the oil has since been extracted, resulting in a decline in active drilling and exploration activities, numerous oil facilities remain throughout the region today.
