Catemaco is a city located in the southern region of the Mexican state of Veracruz. It serves as the municipal seat for the municipality of Catemaco, which extends northward toward the Gulf of Mexico. The city is situated on the shores of Lake Catemaco.
The area is a recognized tourist destination known for its lake and remnants of local rainforest. It is notably characterized by a long-standing tradition of sorcery and witchcraft dating back to the pre-colonial period, a practice primarily conducted by men. This cultural phenomenon attracts a diverse range of clients, including national politicians and businesspeople, and the city hosts an annual event in March dedicated to these practices that can draw up to 5,000 visitors.
