Ixtenco

Mexico

Ixtenco is a city located in the Ixtenco Municipality in the southeastern region of the Mexican state of Tlaxcala. It serves as a traditional Otomi community that has maintained its agricultural economic base and various cultural traditions despite being one of the least populated and poorest municipalities in the state.

The municipality is situated on an old lava flow from the nearby La Malinche Volcano, which provides the area with volcanic soil. However, this geography faces significant erosion issues due to overgrazing and the destruction of forests. Notable landmarks within the region include the San Juan Bautista Parish and the remains of several colonial-era haciendas.
