Huamantla is a small city located in the municipality of the same name within the eastern half of the Mexican state of Tlaxcala. While the surrounding area possesses a long indigenous history, the city itself was established during the early colonial period in the 1530s.
The region is primarily agricultural and is most notable for its annual religious homage to Our Lady of Charity, the Virgin Mary. These festivities span an entire month and feature two primary events: the "night no one sleeps," where residents create six kilometers of street carpets made from flowers, colored sawdust, and other materials, and the "Huamantlada," a traditional running of the bulls.
