Puerto Peñasco is a small city situated in the Puerto Peñasco Municipality in the northwest region of the Mexican state of Sonora. It is located approximately 100 kilometres (62 mi) from the border with the U.S. state of Arizona. According to the 2020 census, the city has a population of 62,689 inhabitants.
The city sits on the northern shores of the Sea of Cortez on a narrow strip of land that connects the Baja California Peninsula with mainland Mexico. The surrounding area is part of the Altar Desert, which is recognized as one of the hottest and driest regions within the larger Sonoran Desert.
