Magdalena de Kino is a city located in the northern section of the Mexican state of Sonora. It serves as the seat of the municipality of the same name, which covers an area of approximately 560 square miles. The city is situated roughly 50 miles from the Mexico-U.S. border and is bordered by the municipalities of Nogales to the north, Santa Ana to the south, Ímuris and Cucurpe to the east, and Tubutama and Sáric to the west.
The municipality's main sectors include San Ignacio, San Isidro, Tacicuri, and Sásabe. According to the 2005 census, the city had a population of 23,101, while the total municipal population was 25,500. The city is named in honor of Father Eusebio Francisco Kino, a pioneer Roman Catholic missionary and explorer who worked in the region as well as in the present-day U.S. state of Arizona.
