Culiacán, officially known as Culiacán Rosales, is the capital and largest city of the state of Sinaloa in northwestern Mexico. It is situated within the Culiacán Municipality.
The city was founded on September 29, 1531, by Spanish conquistadors Lázaro de Cebreros and Nuño Beltrán de Guzmán. It was originally established under the name "Villa de San Miguel" to honor its patron saint, Michael the Archangel.
