Axtla de Terrazas is one of the 58 municipalities located in the central Mexican state of San Luis Potosí. The municipality was officially founded in 1826.
The name Axtla de Terrazas originates from the Nahuatl word "astlan," which translates to "Place of white herons." The suffix "de Terrazas" was added to the name as a tribute to Alfredo M. Terrazas, a figure associated with the Mexican Revolution.
