Tulum is an archaeological site in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, located on the east coast of the Yucatán Peninsula along the Caribbean Sea. It served as a pre-Columbian Mayan walled city and functioned as a major port for Coba. The ruins are notably situated on 12-meter-tall (39 ft) cliffs.
One of the last cities built and inhabited by the Maya, Tulum reached its peak prominence between the 13th and 15th centuries. While the Maya continued to occupy the city for approximately 70 years after Spanish exploration began, it was abandoned by the end of the 16th century. Today, it is recognized as one of the best-preserved coastal Maya sites and remains a popular destination for tourists.
