The name of the city is derived from José María Teclo Morelos Pérez y Pavón, a prominent Mexican Catholic priest, statesman, and military leader. Morelos was a key figure in the Mexican War of Independence, taking over leadership of the movement following the execution of Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla in 1811.
