Cozumel is an island and municipality located in the Caribbean Sea off the eastern coast of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula. It is situated opposite Playa del Carmen and is separated from the mainland by the Cozumel Channel, while remaining in close proximity to the Yucatán Channel.
The municipality is part of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. It serves as a distinct geographical entity within the region, defined by its position between the open sea and the mainland coast.
