Landa de Matamoros is a town located in the Landa de Matamoros Municipality in the northeast of the Mexican state of Querétaro, situated in central Mexico. The area is part of the Sierra Gorda region, an environment characterized by rugged mountains and canyons that host a wide diversity of flora and fauna. Notably, the municipality's plant life represents approximately 25% of all plant diversity found in Mexico.
The region has a complex history influenced by various cultures, including the Huastecas and local groups during the pre-Hispanic period, followed by the Chichimecas, specifically the Pames. Spanish domination was established late, in the mid-18th century; during this time, two of the five Franciscan mission complexes built to solidify Spanish control were constructed within the municipality.
Currently, Landa de Matamoros is a rural and impoverished area characterized by high rates of emigration, particularly to the United States. The local economy is primarily sustained by remittances sent back to the municipality by relatives living abroad.
