Saltillo is the capital and largest city of the northeastern Mexican state of Coahuila. It serves as the municipal seat of the municipality of the same name. According to a 2020 census, the city had a population of 879,958 people, while its metropolitan area reached a population of 1,031,779. This makes Saltillo the largest city in Coahuila and the 14th most populated metropolitan area in Mexico.
The city is recognized as the most competitive city in Mexico for those with over one million inhabitants based on its performance in the Urban Competitiveness Index (ICU). Developed by the Mexican Institute for Competitiveness (IMCO), this index evaluates cities across 35 indicators, including infrastructure, labor market, innovation, law, society, and political systems. Additionally, data from INEGI identifies Saltillo as the safest capital city in Mexico as of 2025.
