Villa de Zaachila

Mexico

Villa de Zaachila is a town and municipality located in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. It is situated approximately 6 km (3.7 mi) from Oaxaca City and forms part of the Zaachila District within the western portion of the Valles Centrales Region.

During the pre-Hispanic era, Villa de Zaachila served as the primary city-state for the Valley of Oaxaca following the fall of Monte Albán. The Zaachila Zapotecs remained the dominant political force in the region until the arrival of the Spanish. In modern times, while the area has been largely quiet, it has experienced significant political unrest since 2006, resulting in the existence of two parallel governments within the municipality.
