Santa Cruz Xoxocotlán is a small city and municipality located in the south of Mexico. It is situated approximately 5 km from Oaxaca, the state capital, and is part of the Centro District within the Valles Centrales region.
The name of the municipality originates from the Nahuatl word "xocotl," which refers to a sour or sweet and sour fruit; the duplicative "xo" indicates "very," making the full phrase mean "among the very sour fruits." Historically, the Mixtec name for the area was Nuunitatnohoyoo, translated as "land of the moon-faced flowers." In contemporary usage, the community is most commonly referred to by the shorthand name Xoxo.
