San Cristóbal Lachirioag is a town and municipality located in the state of Oaxaca in south-western Mexico. It is situated within the Villa Alta District in the center of the Sierra Norte Region, covering a total area of 24.24 km2.
The community is characterized by its agricultural and spiritual foundations. Many residents speak Spanish as a second language, while Villa Alta Zapotec serves as a primary first language for many community members.
The municipality contains several sacred sites, most notably the mountain known as Yawis. This site is used for prayers seeking protection and healing. Local oral traditions passed down by elders describe Yawis as originally being a flying animal larger than an eagle that would transport people to the mountain, where they were never seen again.
