Monterrey is the capital and largest city of the northeastern Mexican state of Nuevo León. Situated at the foothills of the Sierra Madre Oriental, it serves as the primary anchor for the Monterrey metropolitan area, which is the second-largest metropolitan area in Mexico with a population of 5,347,000 as of 2026.
The city proper had a population of 1,142,194 according to the 2020 census. Monterrey is recognized as a major business and industrial hub for both Mexico and the Americas and is frequently considered the richest city in Latin America.
