Tres de Mayo is a city located in Mexico.
While the name refers to a specific location, it is also associated with "The Third of May 1808," a famous painting by Spanish artist Francisco Goya completed in 1814. This artwork commemorates Spanish resistance against Napoleon's armies during the occupation of Madrid at the beginning of the Peninsular War.
Goya created the piece, along with its companion work "The Second of May 1808," following the restoration of King Ferdinand VII and the removal of French forces. The paintings were commissioned by the provisional government of Spain based on Goya's own suggestion to honor those executed during the conflict.
