Uruapan del Progreso, commonly known as Uruapan, is the second largest city in the Mexican state of Michoacán. It is situated at the western edge of the Purépecha highlands, positioned just to the east of the Tierra Caliente region.
The city has been an economically significant location since the colonial period. Following its conquest by the Spanish in 1522, the modern city was laid out in 1534 by Friar Juan de San Miguel. Historically, Uruapan played a notable role in the War of Independence and served as the capital of Michoacán during the French Intervention.
In contemporary times, Uruapan serves as the primary center for Mexico's avocado growing region. The majority of the country's avocado crop is distributed from this city to both national and international markets.
