Santa Clara del Cobre is a municipality and designated Magical Town located in the center of the state of Michoacán, Mexico. It is situated approximately 18 km from Pátzcuaro and 79 km from Morelia, the state capital. While the official name of the municipality is Salvador Escalante, it is frequently identified on maps as Villa Escalante or Salvador Escalante; however, both entities are commonly referred to interchangeably as Santa Clara del Cobre.
The town is part of the Pátzcuaro region and is ethnically dominated by the Purépecha people. This community has a long history of working with copper dating back to the pre-Hispanic era, which established the town's dominance in copper crafts throughout the colonial period and into the 19th century. Although economic shifts led to a near-demise of the local industry, concerted efforts during the 1940s and 1970s successfully restored the town's prominence in copper craftsmanship.
