Sahuayo is a city located in the state of Michoacán in western Mexico, situated near the southern shore of Lake Chapala. It serves as the municipal seat for the surrounding municipality of Sahuayo, which covers an area of 128.05 km2. As of the 2005 census, the city had a population of 59,316.
The city is a significant industrial and commercial hub for the Lake Chapala region, specializing in the production of crafts, hats (sombreros), and sandals known as huaraches. Notably, Sahuayo is home to the world's largest huarache, which measures 7.45 meters long and 3.09 meters wide. The name Sahuayo translates to "turtle shaped pot."
Known as the "Athens of Michoacán," the city has a rich cultural history as a residence for numerous poets, writers, and painters. It currently serves as the seat of the Arts Propositions Association.
