Zumpango is a municipality situated in the northeastern part of the state of Mexico within the Zumpango Region. It is located directly north of Mexico City and is part of the Greater Mexico City urban area.
The municipal seat, Zumpango de Ocampo, is positioned near Lake Zumpango. This lake is notable as the last of the five interconnected lakes that once covered a significant portion of the Valley of Mexico during the pre-Hispanic period. The name Zumpango originates from the Nahuatl word "Tzompanco," which translates to "string of scalps."
