Tlalmanalco is a municipality situated in the far south-eastern region of the State of Mexico. Its name originates from the Nahuatl language and translates to "flat area." The municipal seat, which also serves as the second largest town in the municipality, is Tlalmanalco de Velázquez.
The geography of the municipality is characterized by its proximity to the Iztaccihuatl-Popocatepetl National Park, with the Iztaccihuatl volcano serving as a dominant feature of the landscape. The area is bordered by several municipalities, including Chalco, Ixtapaluca, Cocotitlan, Temamatla, Tenango del Aire, Ayapango, and Amecameca, and it shares a border with the state of Puebla.
The municipality's seal reflects its pre-Hispanic history by depicting flat land and a pyramid surrounded by small mountains, a style of representation found in Aztec codices. Additionally, the town has been officially designated as a "Pueblo con Encanto" by the government of the State of Mexico.
